On August 23, 2008, life changed for entertainer Spragga Benz and family when his 17 year old son Carlton ‘Carlyle’ Grant was gunned down by police under controversial circumstances. His friend who was with him at the time was also injured in the gun play. Spragga, Carlyle's mother Sharon Gapor along with his aunt Veleta Grant formed the Carlyle Foundation for Education just two months ago in an effort to preserve the memory of the fallen youth. It's purpose is “offering financial and other assistance to needy students who are potentially high achievers.” Beneficiaries, all of whom will be chosen by a special panel, will have to maintain a certain level of performance academically. “There will definitely be strings attached,” reported Spragga in an official statement. In a effort to raise funds for the foundation, the Life Fest: Peace and Love Concert is being held on Carlyle’s birthday, May 2. It is as a combined effort of Spragga Benz, Miami based producer Salaam Remi of Boom Tunes fame and other members of the reggae fraternity. The show will be held at Backyard, Constant Spring Road in Kingston. Life Fest was organized and sponsored by Sherman Escoffrey of D’Empire Management. The all-star lineup comprises of not merely entertainers but friends of Spragga who have pledged their full support to this worthy cause, summed up in the simple slogan: “Preserve the Youths… Preserve the Future.” Of the show's format, Spragga is clear. ''Me no wan’ hear no violent songs tomorrow, no gal gal thing. If anything it must be a woman song, and show respect to the empress same way. Me nah preach to nobody but everything in its proper time and place.'' A premiere of the video for “Livication” - a song done in Carlyle’s memory and directed by Cess Silvera (Shottas), will be seen on the show tomorrow. It is a track of off his long in the making album, Shotta Culture, produced by none other than Salaam Remi.
